Teaching the Internet over the Internet: Lessons Learnt and Future Scenarios from the Cisco Networking Academy

On July 7th Andrew Smith, Lecturer in Networking at The Open University gave a seminar at the Knowledge Media Institute entitled: “Teaching the Internet over the Internet: Lessons Learnt and Future Scenarios from the Cisco Networking Academy”. In this seminar, Andrew talked about Packet Tracer, a simulator for teaching networking, developed by Cisco Systems  in 2007/8 as part of the Cisco Networking Academy. He described how this software is used within the Open University, as well as how the development of the multiuser tool may shape the future of teaching networking.

Andrew has spent the last 14 years running Cisco Academy courses; the last 5 at The Open University. Extending Cisco’s main tool Packet Tracer as one of the key tools supporting our blended distance learning model. Andrew is working together with Cisco and the FORGE team at the Knowledge Media Institute in order to develop and deliver networking courses via interactive iBooks, as well as connect the FIRE community to the educational community of the Cisco Networking Academy.
